Back to our US trip. After a few days discovering San Francisco, it was time for me to pack a few things and leave the city. Our first stop was Monterey, a small coastal city located 2h drive from San Francisco. The city is quite touristic as it has great seafood restaurants and bars. But I think that the most popular attraction is The Monterey Bay Aquarium, one of the biggest and most famous aquariums in the US. And that’s exactly what we picked for starting our tour in Monterey.
We left San Francisco quite early to arrive in Monterey at 10am. We started by visiting the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Tickets can be purchased here and cost 49.95$ per adult, which can be seen as quite expensive. You can have better deals though by booking packages with hotel partners if you intend to stay in the city for more than a day.
Discovering the Aquarium Bay
The Aquarium takes at least 3 hours for a good visit.
It has many floors, both inside and outside parts.
During the visit, you will be able to discover sea otters, sharks, sea horses, crabs, colorful crustaceans, riveting reptiles, penguins and so much more.
You will also be able to participate in activities such as touching bat rays or the daily feeding shows. Seeing pinguins and sea otters being fed is priceless ! Special tours or activities (like diving!) can be also ordered.
Discovering the Monterey Bay
After the visit of the Aquarium, we went to discover more on Monterey and we started by its Bay. From this place, you can admire the beautiful view over the harbor. A lot of restaurants serving fresh seafood and little marine boutiques are next to each other. I personnaly chose to eat at the Old Fisherman’s Grotto, a famous spot for good seafood with sea view.
Overall, Monterey is a cute coastal city where nature is predominant. It can be quite resourceful after visiting big bustling cities like San Francisco or L.A.
